- Wet areas: tank with BAL TANK‑IT or BAL WATERPROOF 1C.
- Asphalt: flooring grade only.
- Anhydrite/calcium sulfate: prime with two coats (see guidance).
Do not use showers for at least 2 weeks after grouting. Do not fill pools for at least 3 weeks after grouting (BS 5385: Part 4).
How to Mix BAL AF Max?
- Use a suitable 30 L mixing bucket.
- Add approx. 3 parts powder to 1 part clean cold water by weight (17 kg bag ≈ 6.1 L water).
- Mix to a smooth, lump‑free mortar.
- Stand for 2 minutes, then re‑mix for 30 seconds.
- If using a drill mixer, keep < 300 rpm.
Pot life @ 20 °C: ~45 minutes (shorter when warmer; longer when cooler).
Do not use below 5 °C or in damp conditions. Select a trowel suitable to achieve specified contact in line with BS 5385.
Fixing procedure
- Apply and comb adhesive to required bed thickness (ribs in one direction). Bed thickness 2–10 mm. Back‑butter large/heavily patterned tiles as needed.
- Mosaics: press with rubber tile float and beat into position (note: mosaics not recommended over sound‑reduction matting; typically ≥100×100 mm tiles, 11 mm thick; 8 mm may be used).
- Fix within open time (~20 mins @ 20 °C). Remove skinned adhesive and re‑apply fresh; never re‑temper with water.
- Occasionally lift a tile to verify contact. When solid‑bed fixing, avoid voids.
- Leave adequate joints; install movement joints per BS 5385.
- Clean surplus adhesive from faces and joints before drying.
Grouting & movement joints
- Wait a minimum of 5 hours (at 20 °C) before grouting. Choose a BAL cementitious or epoxy grout (e.g., MICROMAX3 ECO or ABSOLUTE GROUT).
- Paper‑faced mosaics: pre‑grout sheets, place, align joints, wet paper and remove before full set; clean then finish grouting.
- Movement joints: use suitable silicones (e.g., MICROMAX GROUT EFFECT SILICONE); use backing strips/bond‑breakers as required. For intermediate joints, consider epoxy polysulphide or pre‑formed joint strips.
Pools: do not fill for at least 3 weeks after grouting. Seek advice from BAL Technical Advisory Service for specialist cases.
