HardieBacker Board 6mm and 12mm extended information
This no-mesh cement board is appropriate for usage in moist and delicate locations like bathrooms and kitchens where installations need to be waterproof and have great tile adhesion. Using Moldblock® technology, this solution offers exceptional mould and moisture resistance and protects against moisture damage. Also, it indicates that the cement backer board won’t swell or deform.
The 12mm tile backer boards, which have a special cement formulation, are simple to cut to any size by scoring and snapping. This product cuts precisely, enabling accurate edges and perfect alignment.
HardieBacker tile backerboard is CE and BBA approved with certificate no. 04/4100. The product meets the EN 12467 standard and has a class A1 non combustibility rating

Applications
- HardieBacker cement board is intended as an internal substrate for tiling in residential and commercial properties. It’s a water resistant board and can be used in wet areas in both new build and renovation.
- HardieBacker cement board is suitable for use in domestic steam rooms, saunas, swimming pool surrounds and changing areas.
- HardieBacker 500 cement board can be used as backing for new domestic boilers.
HardieBacker Board 6 mm – Timber floor overlay
Preparation
- Ensure subfloor is structurally sound and not damaged. Replace any loose, warped or uneven sections of the floor.
- Make certain the subfloor has a clean and flat surface.
Installation
- Apply a gap filling bed of tile adhesive to the subfloor using a 6 mm notched trowel.
- Embed HardieBacker boards with a sliding motion firmly and evenly in the wet tile adhesive.
- Stagger all HardieBacker board joints in a broken bond or brick pattern. Never allow all four corners of boards to meet at one point. Do not align with subfloor joints.
- Leave a 3 mm gap between floor and wall edges, vanities, baths etc.
- Fasten a minimum of 12 screws into the board (4 rows of 3 screws). Keep fixings between 15 mm from board edges and 50 mm from board corners.
- Fill the gap between floor and wall edges with good quality bathroom sealant.
Finishing Joints
- Prior to setting the tiles, embed 50 mm alkali resistant HardieBacker Tape Fibatape across joints and feather tile adhesive to leave a 150 mm wide joint.
Hardie Backer Board 6 mm – Masonry wall
Preparation
- Remove all existing old dry lining.
- Wipe the back of the Hardie® Backer board to remove dust.
Installation
- Place three vertical 10-12mm beads of high grab strength cartridge adhesive evenly down the back of the board.
- Press board firmly against the wall into the desired position.
- Fasten HardieBacker boards with 9 (6mm x 60mm) stainless steel screws into brown wall plugs.
- Screws should remain 100mm from the top and bottom edges and 50mm from the left and right edges.
- Do not overdrive the screws; it must be flush with the front of the board.

- Prior to setting the tiles, embed 50mm alkali resistant HardieTM Tape Fibatape across joints and feather tile adhesive to leave a 150 mm wide joint.
HardieBacker Board 6 mm – Overboarding Plasterboard or Plaster
Preparation
- Locate existing studs with stud finder and mark the plasterboard or plaster.
Installation
- Boards may be installed vertically or horizontally.
- Ensure all vertical joints are made on the centre of the studs.
- Leave a 3 mm gap between floor and wall edges and fill with a good quality bathroom sealant.
- Fix stainless steel screws (minimum 45 mm length) at 200 mm centres.
- Keep fixings 15 mm from board edges and 50 mm in from sheet corners.
- Set heads of fixings flush with the surface, without overdriving.

- Prior to setting the tiles, embed 50 mm alkali resistant HardieTM Tape Fibatape across joints and feather tile adhesive to leave a 150 mm wide joint.
Hardie Backer Board 12 mm – Stud wall installation
Preparation
- Stud centres can be set at a maximum of 600 mm.
- Ensure framing is structurally sound and not damaged.
Installation
- Boards may be installed vertically or horizontally.
- Ensure all vertical joints are made on the centre of the studs.
- Leave a 3 mm gap between floor and wall edges and fill with a good quality bathroom sealant.
- Fix Hardie® Backer tile backerboard 32 mm or 35 mm screws at 200 mm centres.
- Keep fixings 15 mm from board edges and 50 mm in from sheet corners.
- Set heads of fixings flush with the surface, without overdriving

- Prior to setting the tiles, embed 50 mm alkali resistant HardieTM Tape Fibatape across joints and feather tile adhesive to leave a 150 mm wide joint.
Hardie Backer Board 12 mm – Fire surrounds
Preparation
- Before installing Hardie Backer board, the wall should be inspected to ensure it is structurally sound, clear of obstructions and the correct size for the appliance to be used.
- The board should be installed no closer than 100 mm to the outside case of the stove. Verify combustible clearances for building regulations.
Installation
for painted finish
- If the board is to be painted it can be screwed directly to the brickwork using nine 60 mm screws spaced evenly along and across the board
(3 screws in 3 rows).
for tiled finish
- If the board is to be tiled, a bed of cement based tile adhesive must also be applied to the wall using a 6 mm notched trowel.
- Leave a 3 mm gap between floor and wall edges and fill the joints with a suitable fire mastic or fire cement. Hardie Backer should be allowed to aclimatise for 24 hours before using the stove.

- Prior to setting the tiles, embed 50 mm alkali resistant HardieBacker Fibatape Scrim Tape across joints and feather tile adhesive to leave a 150 mm wide joint.
Finishing
finish with black matt spray
- When Hardie Backer is only being used to line the hearth before setting the fire in place, spray Hardie Backer with a matt black heat resistant paint to provide the desired black background to the stove. Follow paint manufacturers’ installation recommendations.

- Make sure the HardieBacker boards are clean and dry. Follow directions of the tile adhesive manufacturer.
- Please follow the stove manufacturers’ conditioning requirements carefully as too much heat very quickly can lead to problems with both your stove and the substrate.
