Before starting, all substrates must be clean, dry and strong enough to support the weight of the floor composition. Remove all dust, dirt, oil, grease and other contaminants that may affect adhesion. Smooth surfaces should be abraded with a wire brush or mechanically in order to remove contamination and improve the key for the mortar. Absorbent surfaces should be dampened with clean water prior to applying the mortar. Direct to earth subfloors must have an effective Damp Proof Membrane.
Priming is not usually required prior to applying the Rapid Repair Mortar. Absorbent surfaces should be dampened with clean water. Very absorbent surfaces should be primed with Primeplus diluted 3 parts water to 1 part Primeplus. Non-Absorbent surfaces should be primed with a Primeplus slurry coat. The Slurry Mix consists of 1 part water to 1 part Primeplus mixed with approximately 30% by weight of Rapid Repair Mortar, cement based tile adhesive or levelling compound to form a brush on slurry. Allow the Slurry Mix to dry before applying the Rapid Repair Mortar. Alternatively prime the surface with one coat of Prime + Grip and allow to dry.
Mix by adding powder to water and mix a quantity that can be used before the product loses workability, usually 10 – 15 minutes at 20°C. Any product that has started to set must be discarded.
Standard Mix (un-filled): Mix by adding powder to water, approximately 1.9 – 2.2 litres of water to 11kg of Rapid Repair Mortar, alternatively mix 1 part water to 5 parts powder by weight. Mix ideally with an electric paddle and mix to a smooth, lump free consistency. When mixed with 1.9 litres of water, the mortar will have more control making it suitable for vertical applications. When mixed with the higher water content, the mortar becomes wetter and slightly flowable, ideal for certain floor applications. The Standard Mix should not be applied greater than a 20mm depth.
Filled Mix: Add 3 – 5mm aggregate to the standard powder at a ratio of 1 to 1; e.g. 11kg Repair Mortar to 11kg of aggregate. Mix by adding powder to water, approximately 1.9 – 2.2 litres of water to 11kg of Rapid Repair Mortar, alternatively mix 1 part water to 5 parts powder by weight – please note, the water additions may vary slightly depending on the aggregate used. Mix ideally with an electric paddle. The Filled Mix should be used when applying to depths above 20mm and for increased economy. Filled Mix is suitable for depths of 5 – 50mm.
The mixed Rapid Repair Mortar should be used immediately. Trowel the mortar onto the prepared surface and spread to the required thickness using a steel trowel. The mortar can be applied slightly proud and any excess can be removed after 15 – 20 minutes. For a smoother finish, the mortar can be improved by wetting and smoothing the surface before the mortar has fully set, typically after 15 – 20 minutes. When applying the Filled Mix and to improve the surface finish, we recommend applying the mortar slightly below the required level and allow to set. Once the initial coat has hardened, another thin coat of unfilled mortar or self-levelling compound (e.g. Levelflex, Fineflow 3000 or Rapid Level 30) can be applied if necessary to improve the surface finish. If using Rapid Repair Mortar as a final wearing surface a suitable covering/coating is required.
SETTING AND COVERING:
Rapid Repair Mortar will initially set after 15 – 20 minutes and should be sufficiently set to walk on after 30 minutes. The mortar can be covered with a self-levelling compound or the finished flooring after 90 minutes, depending on the application substrate and the ambient conditions/temperatures. Do not use below 50C.
NB: The pot life and drying times depend on the ambient temperatures. At lower temperatures they will be extended and at higher temperatures they will be shortened. Clean tools immediately after use with clean water.
