MUDD The Leveller extended information:
Coverage: Depends on the nature and flatness of the surface, approximately 1.7kg of MUDD THE LEVELLER is required per mm/m².
Floor surfaces should be dry (<75% R.H.), sound, clean and free from dust, grease and other contaminants. An effective damp proof membrane must be incorporated on all direct to earth sub-floors. The temperature of the floor must be >5°C throughout application and drying.
Suitable surfaces include:
Plywood overlaid timber floors/tile backer boards: Ensure boards are rigid, clean, dry, free of any contaminants incompatible with adhesion and securely fixed (screwed to joists at 300mm centres). Prime with 2 coats of MUDD PRIME TIME (undiluted) apply the second coat at 90° to the first, allow to dry between coats.
NB: in areas subject in increased movement such as tongue & grooved floorboards, and single layer plywood floors, a suitable mesh will be required to reinforce MUDD THE LEVELLER in critical areas.

Cement:sand screeds/anhydrite/calcium sulphate screeds/concrete: Must be fully cured and free from any laitance, surface hardeners, dust, dirt etc. Cement:sand screeds and concrete surfaces should be primed with a diluted primer such as MUDD PRIME TIME (1 part primer to 1 part water). Calcium Sulphate and Anhydrite screeds must be primed with a suitable primer such as MUDD PRIME TIME in two coats. Dilute the first coat (1 part primer to 1 part water). Allow to dry before applying the second coat (undiluted). Allow to dry before applying MUDD THE LEVELLER.
Cement:sand screed with existing underfloor heating (following commissioning of the underfloor heating screed): The heating must be switched off at least 48 hours prior to and following application. The floor surface should first be primed with a diluted primer such as MUDD PRIME TIME (1 part primer to 1 part water) prior to applying MUDD THE LEVELLER.
Laying underfloor floor heating: The cement:sand substrate must first be primed with a diluted primer such as MUDD PRIME TIME (1 part primer to 1 parts water). Cables should be laid strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If required MUDD THE LEVELLER may be used to level the existing rigid and stable floor substrate, prior to applying the heating cables as per the heating manufacturer’s recommendations. Apply MUDD THE LEVELLER over the undertile floor heating taking care not to damage the cables.
Uneven timber floors (for soft floor finishes): Ensure that sheets or boards are dry, securely fixed and rigid and that adequate ventilation is provided to the void beneath suspended timber floors (including ground level floors). Lay MUDD THE LEVELLER and allow to dry for minimum of 3 hours (at 20°C). Screw down a layer of 6-12mm plywood (as defined in BS EN 313-2) onto the levelled base.
Existing unglazed ceramic tiles, quarry tiles, terrazzo and natural stone: Should be firmly bonded, clean, dry and free from surface contamination. Any hollow or defective tiles must be cut out and replaced.
Asphalt: must be of a suitable grade i.e. flooring grade, must be clean, in sound condition and have adequate cohesive strength. The surface does not need to be primed.
Old ceramic adhesive residues: Remove as much adhesive as possible. Any remaining residue should be unaffected by water, soundly bonded, clean, dry and dust-free. The surface does not have to be primed.
Add MUDD THE LEVELLER to clean water and mix thoroughly until a smooth mortar is obtained. Allow to stand for 2 minutes then re-mix.
If using an electric drill mixer, blend at slow speed (i.e. less than 300 r.p.m). A 20kg bag will require approx. 4.2 litres of water. The mixed material is immediately ready to use and should be used within 30 minutes of mixing (at room temperature).
- Prime surface as required (see PREPARATION section above for details).
- Pour the mix over the area to be levelled and spread to the required depth using a steel trowel.
- Trowel until a smooth surface is achieved.
- The new surface should be hard enough to walk on after 3 hours depending on the thickness of application and site conditions (at 20°C). A 3mm thickness of MUDD THE LEVELLER will be ready to receive ceramic floor coverings after 4 hours and soft coverings after 24 hours.
NOTE: Do NOT use a spiked roller as this will pull the fibres to the surface.
